The problem was that Faolan wanted pack life and couldn't be accepted by a pack until he had survived alone. The climax of this book is late in the story, near the end. Faolan is mistaken for a wolf with the ''foaming mouth disease'' when a wolf gets splayed toes, the instinct to bite always triggered, and of course, their mouth foams. They tried to kill him by chasing him into a wall of fire, but Faolan jumped over it, . He then was asked to join a pack as the lowest ranking wolf, after they realized he was sane. Faolan accepted the offer. Soon, he was shown how and what to gnaw into bones. Even later, the clan wolves said he was to be named soon, and Faolan told them about how he got his name.
