Faolan
Faolan is the main character of the story, and most of it is from his point of view. Abandoned by his pack, the MacDuncans, he was left to die. He was found by a bear and raised to be the strongest. Faolan is a large wolf with bright green eyes and silver fur. On one of his paws has a swirling pattern and splayed toes.
<SPOILER ALERT!> Faolan jumped a wall of fire and was accepted once again as a 'Malcadah' wolf, the lowest rank, in the MacDuncan clan. (page 208) |
ThunderheartThunderheart is a grizzly bear, and the second most important character in this story. She took care of Faolan when she saw him drowning as a pup in the icy river. She decided to take care of him because she had lost two cubs and thought the river had brought him as a gift. She named him Faolan because "Fao means Wolf. Fao means river. Lan means gift. So I shall name him Faolan. He is my river gift." Thunderheart is kind and sharing, always worried that Faolan would not be fatty enough to survive winter hibernation.
<SPOILER ALERT!> Thunderheart is killed by a boulder during an earthquake. Faolan's true mother recognizes the scent of her pup on Thunderheart's fur and thanks the body for caring for him. |
